"Nothing is routine."
Get To Know Capt. Herbert M. Walling

What in your life drew you to your current field of study?

Upon graduation from high school, I wanted something different in an education. Going to sea represented a challenge, a different life style, and a financially rewarding career with just a four year education. Maine Maritime Academy provided the education I needed to be successful in achieving the goals I set for myself in the maritime industry. The power and majesty of the sea did challenge me, and I am a better person and professional for meeting those challenges.

What do you hope your students gain from studying or working with you?

Officers in the maritime industry must be communicators, leaders, effective decision-makers, and operationally focused on their duties and responsibilities at all times. My job as an instructor at the Texas A&M Maritime Academy is to instill the knowledge and values associated with successfully carrying out these responsibilities.

What are you passionate about in your personal life?

Family and grandchildren, model tugboats, the towing industry, history with emphasis on the Civil War, reading books, staying up on current events, getting set up for retirement, football and the Philadelphia Eagles.
