"If you have become successful in your field, it is your obligation to send the elevator back down."
Get To Know John F. Hark

What in your life drew you to your current field of study?

I grew up around the water. High school summers were spent in Galveston fishing offshore with my uncle. We would go past the TAMUG campus on every trip. After finding out about the MARA program, I did not want to go anywhere else. I have been fortunate with the MARA degree to always live near the coast. My love of the water fit well with the MARA degree.

What do you hope your students gain from studying or working with you?

I have been working in the maritime industry for almost 30 years and much of it has been in the chartering side of the business. I strive to give the students a real world perspective with our weekly classes to tie chartering theory to practical and timely examples. We also spend a good amount of time on soft skills and the best way to present and set yourself apart in the working world.

What are you passionate about in your personal life?

My wife Amy (MARA ’94) and I both have busy careers so our family time with our daughter, Saylor, is very important to us. I am also active in various maritime industry associations and advisory councils that are focused on industry issues and bringing young people into the maritime industry. It is a long time passion of mine to bring along the next generation of maritime professionals and share knowledge with them. Being a MARA ’89 grad and an Adjunct at TAMUG, I am especially keen to help TAMUG students get into the maritime industry.
