GIS Services

GIS Services at The Commons is here to assist with the geospatial needs of students & faculty of Texas A&M University at Galveston. The Learning & Research Commons has excellent resources that will support your motivation to learn about how GIS technology can help you work and research more effectively.

GIS (Geographic Information Systems) services offer assistance in developing data collection methods, performing spatial analysis, geostatistical analysis & spatial statistics through one-on-one or group consultations.

GIS is the acronym for Geographic Information Systems to gather, store, manipulate, manage, analyze, and visualize all types of spatial information. It is rooted in the science of Geography. GIS integrates various data types, of which raster and vector formats are most common. Spatial data is assigned geographic attributes, organized into layered information and visualised as maps and 3D models. Data patterns, relationships and deeper insight into spatial data is revealed using GIS.

We can help you:

  • Plan your GIS projects
  • Develop methods for data collection
  • Select, access software and tools (desktop, open source, cloud software)
  • Find and organize your data
  • Integrate data such as latitude/longitude, addresses, places, scanned maps, etc., into a GIS and visualize your data
  • Generate maps for posters, eportfolios & presentations
  • Perform spatial & geostatistical analysis
  • Preserve and share data
GIS Technology is an excellent tool to engage students inside the classroom. GIS Services compliments your teaching by presenting strategies for integrating GIS to support instruction, discussion, and extended learning on any topic.
Integrating GIS technology in a classroom helps students:
  • Investigate a problem using GIS
  • Visualize local, regional, and global data and make connections to their own environment
