Award issued by the LABB:

THE AWARD:
Once a month, the Laboratory for Applied Biotelemetry & Biotechnology selects an outstanding website related to research and education in marine life sciences. In recognition of their contribution to the dissemination of educational, useful and accurate information on the internet, these Site-of-the-Month selections are issued the LABB Seal of Approval:

LABB Seal of Approval

(The LABB Seal of Approval is copyrighted by M.Horning, 2000, and may not be used or reproduced without explicit permission)

CRITERIA:
Sites are selected based on excellence, novelty and usefulness in content and information that we consider to provide an outstanding contribution to research and education related to marine life sciences. Sites can be personal, commercial, non-profit or governmental. Sites should preferably be in English, but sites in Italian, German or Spanish can also be nominated, in which case minimal information in English, or access to a translation service, is recommended.

Content quality is the primary award criterion. To qualify for the LABB Seal of Approval, a site has to present content that is new and original, and not available on another site in a similar manner or collection. Content has to be informative, educational, and scientifically accurate. Content has to relate directly or indirectly to the marine environment. As an alternative to original content, sites may qualify if they provide access to valuable informational resources in a highly effective manner.

If a site meets the content criterion, then site design, presentation and navigation are additional award criteria that are secondary to content. Most of all, navigation has to be simple and intuitive. The main site page should never be more than one click away. The primary sections and hirarchy of the site should be easy to infer at one glance. Accessibility enhancements to facilitate access to visitors with disabilities are strongly encouraged and a definite plus (see the LABB entry page)! We recommend you check your sites with CASTS's Bobby for accessibility, and with an HTML validator for proper html code (links available through the logos on the bottom of this page). More than one pop-up window and too may banners are frowned upon, as are useless Java applets (cursor trails, sound that cannot be turned off, etc..). Framing other content as your own, a disabled back button, automatic addition to bookmarks/favorites and opening of new windows upon leaving site are instant disqualifiers. How important these secondary criteria are depends on the number of nominations for the month. Display of the award graphic or a link to the awarding site is not required.

PROCESS:
To nominate a site for the Seal of Approval, email the LABB webmaster at:

contact electronic mail information for the LABB. The complete email address consists of the abbreviated name of the Laboratory for Applied Biotelemetry and Biotechnology - use the four capitalized letters, then the at sign, followed by the abbreviation of our university Texas A and M University at Galveston - use the five capitalized letters in lower case, followed by dot edu

with the nominated URL, brief description of site content, and site webmaster contact and email information, as well as name and email contact for the submitting person if different from webmaster. You do not have to be a site owner or webmaster to nominate a site. In submitting a nomination via email, the submitter certifies that she/he is at least 18 years of age, and has read and accepted our privacy policy.

Nominated sites will be reviewed by one or more members of the LABB. Content quality will be assessed by marine biologists, and scientific standards will be applied in the review of contents! Individual sites can be nominated for this award only once during a 12 month period. Resubmissions, even after major changes in nominated sites, are not permitted within this period. Since this award is only issued once a month, many excellent sites may not receive an immediate award. Sites submitted during one month that do not receive our award will automatically be considered for the following 11 months, unless the submitter states otherwise. Only sites receiving the award will be notified, notifications will be sent to site webmasters only, not to submitters if different. Notifications will be sent to award recipients within six weeks of nominations. Nominated sites that do not receive an award, but that will be considered during the following months, will also receive notification within this 6 week period. Unqualified sites will not be notified.

The current (most recent) award recipient is listed in our NEWS section.
