Here are pages within our site that contain some cool pictures from around the world:

Antarctic Wildlife (Emperor penguins, Adelie penguins, orcas, skuas, snow petrels)

This image shows an adult emperor penguin just as it is sliding across an ice edge and into the cold antarctic water. The ice the penguin is diving in from is the annual saltwater ice that is very thin. The ice edge is elevated above the water by only about 20 centimeters. The penguin's beak is just about touching the water.

Antarctica 2001 (From a recent antarctic research project on weddell seals)

A view past the large Barne Glacier seen as a tall and slightly crumbling vertical ice front, towards Hut Point Peninsula on Ross Island in the background.

Antarctica 1981 (Some nostalgic pictures)

A person clad in a thick hooded parka is seen struggling against fierce winds in front of a wooden hut in this black and white image.

White Island (Spending a winter in an Antarctic field camp)

This picture shows two researchers clad in thick hooded parkas wearing goggles and thick gloves, standing on snowmobiles against the backdrop of a black winter sky. The silhouette of Mount Erebus on the distant Ross Island is seen in the background, silhouetted by bright orange noctilucent clouds.

Inside the Ross Shelf Ice (Images from inside a large crevasse)

This image is cast in a light blue. It shows the interior of a deep and narrow ice crevasse. The crevasse is covered at the top by a snow bridge. A hole in the snow bridge lets in some light that illuminates the crevasse., including the sheer ice slabs forming the side walls. A person is visible as a black shadow standing on the bottom of the crevasse, giving a scale to the width and depth of the crevasse. The crevasse is about 8 meters wide and about 40 meters deep.

The Ring of Fire (Go inside an erupting volcano!)

This image shows three Galapagos sea lions lounging on sand against the backdrop of the 1500 meter tall shield volcano La Cumbre on Fernandina Island in Galapagos. The image was taken at night during the April 1991 eruption of the volcano. The dark sky is lit up by an intensely red glow above the crater rim. This red light comes from active magma jets inside the caldera reflected by the steam, ash and gas cloud emitted from the volcano.

Galapagos Wildlife (Galapagos fur seals, hawk, marine and land iguana, field work and more)

This image shows the upper body of a yellow Galapagos land iguana. The iguana is resting over the top of a black lava rock, with the two fore limbs draped over the rock, and the head propped up and looking to the side of the image.

Galapagos Fur Seal Project

This image shows the head of a female adult Galapagos fur seal. The closeup side view of the head in silhouette against a mostly blue sky background shows the pointy nose and the many long vibrissae or whiskers of the seal. The pointy ears are also barely recognizable.

More Galapagos Images

This picture shows one of the lava grey Galapagos marine iguanas resting on a lava rock against the background of the Cabo Hammond lagoon. On the far side of the lagoon the darck lava coastline of Fernandina Island can be seen, and in the far distance the outline of the La Cumbre shield volcano that dominates Fernandina can be seen.

Alaska (Steller sea lions, and pictures from aerial surveys)

This aerial view of a stretch of an Aleutian Island coastline in winter time show a steep, rocky and rugged coastline with a rough surf zone, and ice covered rocks above the surf zone.
