our camp at cabo hammond on fernandina island galapagos

Our camp at Cabo Hammond on Fernandina Island, in the Galapagos, in 1991.

Fernandina measures about 20 by 30 km, and is dominated by the 1500 m tall shield volcano "La Cumbre". This volcano is the most active in the Galapagos, with on average an eruption about every two years. The caldera of La Cumbre is very large, with a diameter of about 5-6 km, and a depth of about 1000m. At times, there is a lake at the bottom of the caldera.
