Description of Duties  & Responsibilities

Writing Lab Consultants assist students & faculty writers at any stage in the writing lifecycle including research, reasoning, planning, revising, editing, publishing and presenting. A Writing Lab Consultant will use their strong written and verbal communication skills to understand the needs of the student in regards to their writing, to provide a knowledgeable and open-minded perspective, to confer helpful feedback, and to train students how to use appropriate online tools to better their academic and scientific research, writing, and communication skills. The duties of the job include assisting students with understanding databases and other research resources; content revision, grammatical editing, document formatting, and citations for research papers, lab reports, resumes, applications, speeches, presentations and other types of publications; performing outreach services to peers and the community; and developing and presenting training tools for fellow consultants and peers for professional development. This position has the opportunity for advancement and connections with faculty across the curriculum.

Job Qualifications

Students interested in this position should be skilled writers, readers and listeners. Writing Lab Consultants need to work in a team as well as individually, be self-motivated, possess a positive attitude, be able to work under the guidance of others, train others in the future as he/she advances, and be willing to work with a variety of personalities and learning styles with compassion and understanding.  Ability to use Word, PowerPoint and Excel is necessary. Familiarity with APA and MLA style guides and TutorTrac software is desired. Interest in new technologies useful for writing and research as well as video editing is a plus. A GPA of 2.5 or higher and at least one full year left at TAMUG are required.
