Job Description

The Office of Academic Enhancement (ACEN) First Scholars Peer Mentors are full-time students who successfully matriculated past their freshman year. These students will provide transitional and educational support during the First Scholars Program. The mission of the First Scholars program is to serve Texas resident. First Generation, incoming freshman students in the transition to the university by offering research based, multilevel support to address the unique challenges of first generation students.

First Scholars Peer Mentors will assist First Scholars with campus resources and culture, develop and cultivate social relationships, and instill a sense of community towards enhanced student retention. Additionally, First Scholar Peer Mentors will assist these students in becoming equipped with the skills needed to successfully navigate their first year in college, as well as with First Scholar Learning Community activities and program events. First Scholar Peer Mentors will gain leadership experience and detailed knowledge of the diversity of our majors and campus resources.

Job Qualifications

  • Available for employment from September 4th  thru December 6th 2017.
  • Have a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA or higher at the time of application and maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA while employed as an ACEN First Scholars Peer Mentor.
  • Successfully matriculated post freshman year (at least sophomore status).
  • First Generation students are highly encouraged to apply.
  • Knowledgeable of campus and ACEN resources.
  • Excellent interpersonal. communication, and organization skills.
  • Ability to conduct workshops and/or seminars.
  • Collegiate level critical thinking skills.
