Position Details

Texas A&M University at Galveston invites external applications for a Full Professor to serve as Head of the Department of General Academics. This is a 12-month appointment, which will become a regular 9-month faculty position when the term(s) as Head expires.  The appointment as Department Head is initially for a five-year term, and there is a mandatory review by the faculty prior to a potential renewal for a second term.  It is unusual but not unprecedented for a department head to serve more than 2 five-year terms.  The university normally provides one summer’s salary to a department head that becomes a regular faculty member.  During Department Head service, the teaching load is 2-3 courses (3-credits) per academic year.  Tenured Faculty teach 4-5 courses in an academic year.  The duties of Department Head include but are not limited to providing academic leadership entailing faculty evaluations, faculty hiring, class scheduling, student academic advisement, and budgeting.  The department head is helped by an Assistant Department Head.  Salary will be commensurate with experience.

A branch campus of Texas A&M University (in College Station), the Galveston campus functions much like a school or college within the larger university, to deliver ocean-oriented education, research, and public service in a variety of marine/maritime programs.  It is the only state maritime training academy located on the Gulf of Mexico.  Instructional programs are delivered primarily at the 130-acre Mitchell Campus on Pelican Island, near the mouth of Galveston Bay.  Texas A&M University at Galveston is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Texas A&M University at Galveston has approximately 125 full-time Faculty members and an undergraduate enrollment of about 2,000 students and 7,100 graduate students.  The Department of General Academics employs 28 full-time and 19 part-time faculty members.  It offers courses that support nine marine-related majors and administers a BA in Maritime Studies.  There are no graduate-level teaching opportunities for the Faculty of General Academics, and much of the teaching load is in service courses, often lower-division. A variety of disciplines are represented by the Department’s Faculty members, including anthropology, archeology, classics, communications, English, history, kinesiology, maritime studies, mathematics, philosophy, political science, psychology, and Spanish.

Education, Experience and Expectations

The ideal candidate will possess an earned doctorate in one of the disciplines taught by the department, a distinguished record of teaching and scholarship, and experience in academic administration. The Head must have superior interpersonal skills to be able to handle the large variety of disciplines in the Department and collaborate with the other Department Heads and the higher administration.  It is essential that the Head respect all disciplines in the department while being able to recognize their differences (e.g. for the evaluation of Promotion and Tenure dossiers). In addition, the ideal candidate will engender a climate that values and uses diversity in all its forms to enliven and make more inclusive the work of the department.
