Graduate Student Orientation FAQ

Do I need to attend all Orientation events?

Participation in Orientation is strongly encouraged. Orientation begins around 9am and concludes mid-afternoon. Some activities are required (Human Resources Workshop, Counseling Center Training for TAs, Teaching Assistant Institute (TAI) and students will be asked to check in and provide photo identification. Please note that all incoming graduate students accepted into Galveston based programs (MARM, MARB, MAAL) will be charged a Graduate Orientation fee on their first semester bill.

I’m an international student living in the United States. Is there a separate orientation that I need to attend?

Texas A&M University International Student Services hosts the International Student Conference for all students who do not hold U.S. citizenship, regardless of prior residence. Additional questions can be directed to International Student Services.

I will be unable to arrive in time to participate in Orientation. What do I need to do?

You will need to notify the Graduate Studies Office. When you arrive on campus, you will be expected to attend the next available makeup session for any activities that were required. Information on the makeup dates can be obtained from the Graduate Studies Office.

I started attending classes in the summer. Do I still need to attend Orientation?

Yes, attendance is expected for all new students who begin classes in Summer or Fall.

I am a former Texas A&M University Galveston undergraduate. Do I need to attend graduate Orientation?

Yes, while many of the practices and policies are the same for graduate students and undergraduate students, there are several aspects that make the graduate school experience unique and attendance at Orientation would be beneficial. At the very least, you would need to participate in the required activities.

I will be employed at Texas A&M Galveston as a Graduate Assistant. What do I need to bring to Orientation?

All students employed by Texas A&M University at Galveston will be expected to provide documentation to verify identity and employment eligibility through completion of Form I-9. You will need to bring your original social security card as well as your driver’s license or passport to complete the I-9. International students who do not yet have a social security number should check with Graduate Studies prior to filing for a social security number.   

I have certain dietary restrictions (vegetarian, vegan, religious dietary practices, glutenfree, medical and food allergies, etc.). Who should I notify?

All meals will include vegetarian options, and every effort will be made to accommodate additional dietary restrictions. Please send an email to gradstudies@tamug.edu prior to Orientation indicating any dietary restrictions.

I have a spouse/partner/child that I would like to join me during Orientation. Will they be able to participate?

Orientation is geared towards transitioning new graduate students into Texas A&M University at Galveston. Most of the day will be spent informing students of policies, procedures, and regulations related to their role as graduate students. As such, we ask that only new graduate students plan to attend Orientation events.

My address or phone number has changed. How do I update this information?

All new students will receive information regarding the Howdy portal. This portal will allow you to update your contact information and access your academic record. If you have not received instructions on setting up a NetID and password by mid-July, please send an email to gradstudies@tamug.edu.
