"After we won the championship, I began to realize that I was now in the
unique position to make a real difference in the lives of other people";
Rudy Tomjanovich at the First Rudy T Golf Tournament.
The Rudy Tomjanovich Merit Scholarship Program was established by Coach Rudy Tomjanovich and his wife Sophie in 1994 to provide funding to students who have worked through adversity to earn the academic skills to attend college, but do not have adequate financial resources.
The program has awarded in excess of $100,000 in scholarships at Texas A&M University at Galveston to help defer the costs of tuition, fees and books. Coach Tomjanovich wants to reward the student who, regardless of circumstances, has not yielded to difficult pressures and has earned his/her high school diploma through perseverance and diligence. The student must have demonstrated financial need.
The program will award up to $2,000 per year to pay for or defer the cost of tuition, fees, and books. Based on performance, these scholarships may be renewed annually by the institution. Awards will be made to U.S. citizens only but without regard to gender, race, religion or disability. Students who are residents of the City of Galveston and recent graduates of either Galveston Ball High or O’Connell High School will be given first priority. Additional preference will be extended to Galveston and Harris County graduates for attendance at Texas A&M University at Galveston. Scholarship recipients and their parents may be asked to attend a Houston Rockets game as the guests of Coach Tomjanovich. Recipients may also be asked to assist with the Rudy Tomjanovich Celebrity Golf Tournament and other fund raising events. Requirements:
