Federal Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students
(PLUS Loan)

Loan Description

The Federal PLUS Loan is an unsubsidized loan available to the parents of dependent undergraduate students. With this loan, the parent may only borrow up to the Cost of Attendance (excluding any other financial aid). An origination fee of 3% is collected upon disbursement from select lenders. Typically, all funds are received electronically and posted to the students' billing account to pay university authorized tuition and fees.

Eligibility

Student must be attending at least half-time (6 hours) and making satisfactory academic progress as determined by the University. Also, the parent must meet the credit criteria set by their chosen lender.

NOTE: Completion of the Federal Application for Federal Student Aid is not required but is highly recommended.

Repayment

Traditionally, repayment begins 30-60 days after the funds are fully disbursed with an average repayment term of up to ten (10) years.  PLUS loans are the financial responsibility of the parents, not the student. If the student agrees to make payments on the PLUS loan, but fails to make the payments on time, the parents will be held responsible.

Instructions

Parents wanting to accept their PLUS loan need to go on to Loans By Web https://lbw.tgslc.org/LBW/start.do as soon as possible, select “I am a parent borrower” and supply the borrower’s (the parent) social security number and birth date.  Next, provide the students social security number and birth date when prompted.  The next step is to choose the “Complete a loan award” option.  This page will say “there are no awards to complete at this time;” however, at this point the parents needs to choose Texas A&M at Galveston from the list of schools and click “Create a Loan Request.”  At this point, they are actually filling out the PLUS loan application…the loan period is 8/27/2007 through 5/7/2008. If for any reason you do not understand these instructions or feel more comfortable being walked through the process with a person please call (800) 332-1455 and someone can assist you.

Make sure
to e-sign or print and sign a Master Promissory Note (MPN).  If you print the MPN, send it to the lender.  DO NOT SEND THE MPN TO TAMUG.

Make sure you are requesting the money needed for the entire school year from August to May. **PLEASE NOTE MORE THAN ONE APPLICATION OUT ON LOANS BY WEB WILL CAUSE A DELAY WITH YOUR FINANCIAL AID, SO PLEASE ONLY SUBMIT ONE APPLICATION.**

Also, after completing the PLUS application, the certification for the PLUS loans will not be done until the first week of August.  You will be notified through an aggnews that the Plus loan certification is complete and the loan is guaranteed. Thank you for your patience.  This allows us to make all adjustments to aid before the guarantee is complete.

PLUS Refund Authorizationclick here.
The PLUS Refund Authorization allows the parent to designate the PLUS Loan refund to be given to the student instead of being mailed to the parent.
