Recreational Diving Courses at TAMUG
TAMUG offers a full range of recreational diving courses, from beginner certification through Instructor training under the auspices of the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI). TAMUG recreational diving courses are all a minimum of three credit hours, and are offered year-round. TAMUG operates two fully stocked diving lockers and all core equipment needed for training (regulators/instruments, BCD’s, cylinders, weights) is provided by TAMUG.
SCUBA I – NAUI Scuba Diver
SCUBA I is TAMUG’s entry level SCUBA training course. Upon successful completion of this course the student will have the basic academic knowledge and skills development needed to safely conduct SCUBA dives; the student will also have acquired the First Aid/CPR skills necessary to provide basic life support in the event of an emergency.
Upon successfully completing training agency certification requirements, students are awarded the NAUI SCUBA Diver rating, and are considered competent to engage in open water diving activities without supervision, provided the diving activities and the areas dived approximate those of training.
Prerequisites:
1. Must complete a medical statement showing no contraindications to diving, or have a recreational scuba diver’s physical examination. Must sign appropriate waivers and releases.
Certification upon completion: NAUI Scuba Diver & NAUI 1st Aid, CPR, and AED
Note: Concurrent enrollment in both MAST 110 (Scuba I lecture; 2 credit hours) and KINE 199 (Scuba I lab; 1 credit hour) are required for this course
SCUBA II – NAUI Advanced Scuba Diver & NAUI Scuba Rescue Diver
Scuba II is a continuing education course for certified divers. It is designed to promote safe diving through additional experience and practice underwater. This course promotes increased diver proficiency and confidence through introductory training in a wide variety of practical topics, and to build competency in dive planning and organization. Emphasis will be to improve upon the divers comfort, coordination, and strength in the water.
An additional component of this course is the integration of diving rescue techniques that teach the knowledge and skills required to handle limited in-water problems and diving emergencies. Students will gain a working knowledge of basic diver stress management and recognition, diver rescue and life-saving skills in the water.
Prerequisites:
- Equivalent Open Water certification from a nationally recognized training agency (TAMUG Scuba I preferred)
- Must complete a medical statement showing no contradictions to diving, or have a recreational scuba diver’s physical examination. Must sign appropriate waivers and releases.
- Divers Alert Network (DAN) Insurance (or equivalent)
- Current CPR, First Aid and Emergency Oxygen certifications (required by end of semester)
Certification upon completion: NAUI Advanced Scuba Diver, NAUI Scuba Rescue Diver, NAUI Emergency Oxygen Administrator

Divemaster
The NAUI Divemaster rating is the highest NAUI leadership-level certification with the exception of Instructor. The course is designed to train experienced and knowledgeable dive leaders to safely organize and conduct enjoyable open water dives for certified divers, and to provide the knowledge and experience necessary to assist with NAUI diver training, provided the diving activities and environments approximate those in which the Divemaster is trained.
Prerequisites:
- Must have a recreational scuba diver’s physical examination.
- Certification as A NAUI Master Scuba Diver and a NAUI Scuba Rescue Diver or their equivalent. Divers with evidence of equivalent training and experience must pass the NAUI Master Scuba Diver and NAUI Scuba Rescue Diver written exams with minimum scores of 75% on each.
- Documentation of diving experience with a minimum of 60 logged dives; dives shall be varied in environment, depth and experience.
- Water skills and ability equivalent to that of a NAUI Assistant Instructor.
- Current certifications in First Aid, CPR and Emergency Oxygen Administration.
- Divers Alert Network (DAN) Insurance (or equivalent).
Certification upon completion: NAUI Divemaster
Note: The TAMUG Divemaster course is offered as a MAST 485 (three credit hours) and requires permission of the instructor prior to enrollment
