William C. Hearn '63
Student Development Endowment

As the sea has influenced our campus since its inception so, too, has Mr. William C. “Bill” Hearn ’63 influenced the students, faculty and staff of Texas A&M University at Galveston over his more than thirty-three years of service. The retirement of Bill Hearn in January, 2008 marked the end of an era at TAMUG that has seen unprecedented growth in all aspects of campus life from student affairs to facilities expansion to the largest enrollment ever at TAMUG.

The retirement ceremony included a demonstration by the Texas State Maritime Academy Corps of Cadets Honor Guard, presentations by Former Students, the reading of proclamations from local, state and federal officials as well the kickoff of the:

Sea Aggie Walkway

and

William C. Hearn ’63 Student Development Endowment Campaign

The first brick to be laid in the new walkway was dedicated to Bill. Proceeds from the current brick campaign, along with the proceeds from bricks and benches already purchased by Former Students, friends of TAMUG, current students, faculty and staff will perpetuate the endowment.  The walkway and endowment will serve as an enduring legacy of Bill’s countless contributions to the development of student leadership at TAMUG. Your contributions to the endowment will serve as a permanent means of supporting the programs and leadership opportunities for students cultivated by Bill over his career.

Four-by-eight-inch bricks can be purchased for $100 per brick.  For every $250 donated to the endowment fund, a dollar-for-dollar match will be provided through the Texas A&M Foundation up to a total match of $10,000. Completion of the walkway is scheduled for Fall 2008.  You may also be able to double, triple or quadruple the amount of your contribution to the endowment campaign by taking advantage of a corporate matching program. If your company has such a program, you may be able to make a larger donation to the endowment and receive a charitable deduction for the amount you give.
