The George P. Mitchell Society

The George P. Mitchell Society is comprised of individuals and organizations committed to the well-being of our oceans through maritime and marine research, education and training as conducted at the only maritime university on the gulf coast’s premier ocean front, Texas A&M University at Galveston.

Established in honor of George Phydias Mitchell, fighting Texas Aggie class of 1940, the spirit of the Mitchell Society is to enhance the development of the Galveston Campus at Texas A&M University. Your membership dues will help to support the student body, faculty and various programs at Texas A&M Galveston.

Members of the George P. Mitchell Society are individuals and organizations who contribute a minimum of $1,000 annually to the Texas A&M Foundation, designated for the Society. Membership to the Society is an annual donation spanning the current fiscal year. Your contribution will cover membership from September 1, 2016 to August 31, 2017.

In addition to donating the 140 acres on Pelican Island, Mr. Mitchell is one of the most significant monetary donors to Texas A&M University’s two U.S campuses in College Station and Galveston.

Mr. Mitchell founded his own successful exploration company and founded The Woodlands, a master-planned community on the north-west side of Houston, TX. A Galveston native, he led the rejuvenation of Galveston’s historic Strand District and helped revive the city’s Mardi Gras celebration.
