Dr. Van Zandt's CV
Dr. Van Zandt's research, which has
been funded by the NSF and the U.S. Department of Housing and
Urban Development, centers on the spatial distribution of
housing and the consequences for vulnerable populations,
including in terms of exposure to impacts from natural hazards
and climate change.
Her current research—funded with two
consecutive grants from the NSF—focuses on social vulnerability
to and recovery from Hurricane Ike in Galveston, Texas. Dr. Van
Zandt has been actively engaged in Galveston, directing
collection and analysis of physical and social data related to
storm impacts.
As Coordinator of the Master of Urban
Planning program at Texas A&M, Dr. Van Zandt connects her
research activities to both the education of planning graduate
students and the planning profession through applied planning
projects and engagement with real communities along the Texas
Coast. She is a faculty fellow or affiliate of the Hazard
Reduction & Recovery Center, the Center for Texas Beaches &
Shores, the Center for Housing and Urban Development, and the
Race and Ethnic Studies Institute; and member of the American
Planning Association, having served a recent term on the Board
of the Texas Chapter of the APA. Her graduate-level planning
courses include courses in urban structure, land use planning
methods, applied planning, planning history and theory,
neighborhood revitalization, and housing policy.
