Spirit Unit

Texas A&M University at Galveston’s Corps of Cadets has traditionally consisted of two separate, but closely related, groups – the Texas Maritime Academy (TMA) and the Navy ROTC. The TMA Cadets are training towards civilian careers as professional officers in the commercial shipping industry. The Navy ROTC Midshipmen are participating in the U.S. Navy’s College Program, earning officer status in the U.S. Navy while earning their degrees from Texas A&M University.

Cadets are strongly advised to attend, the SALT Camp. Attendance is optional, but is recommended to ensure a great beginning to the academic experience at TAMUG.

What is the Spirit Program?

The Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M University in College Station is known as “the Keepers of the Spirit.” Through participation in leadership programs, in Aggie Traditions, and in the Corps of Cadets at Galveston, the Spirit Program allows students to participate in the TMA Corps of Cadets without pursuing a license option program. The unit will also serve to prepare students for participation in the  College Station Corps of Cadets.

How do I apply for the Spirit Program?

First, the students should apply to Texas A&M University at Galveston through the normal admissions process (see www.applytexas.org). You may choose any major that closely matches your future College Station choice of major or a general studies program.

Navy ROTC: Some Spirit Cadets may wish to join the Navy ROTC program (if they intend to continue in College Station as NROTC Cadets). These cadets will apply to the NROTC program. Any cadets who opt for and are accepted for NROTC will also enroll in NROTC freshman classes.

Texas Maritime Academy: Other Spirit cadets may choose to participate in the Texas Maritime Academy if they do not intend to pursue a military commitment (and ROTC scholarship) in College Station. These students will apply to enter the Texas Maritime Academy as non-license option students.

What are the costs of participation?

Tuition
All Spirit Cadets will pay normal tuition rates for Texas residents or out-of-state residents.

Uniforms
Navy ROTC cadets will have minimal uniform expenses and additional costs for O-Week supplies. Most of their uniform requirements will be provided by the U.S. Navy. Most of these items will be used in College Station as well.

Other Spirit Unit cadets will purchase about $500 in uniforms with additional costs for O-Week supplies. Some, but probably not all, of these uniform items will be used in College Station.

What will the Spirit Program do?

Aggie Traditions are strong at the Galveston campus.
Leadership training and Aggie Traditions are the focus of this group. Special cadet units will be created within the Galveston Corps of Cadets (both Texas Maritime Academy and Navy ROTC). Cadets will fully participate in Cadet life – uniforms, formations, room inspections, military customs and courtesies. They will live on campus and will be housed with other cadets. They will enroll in the non-credit Thursday afternoon corps activities period (conducted on the training ship). This corps activities period provides leadership training through maritime skills drills such as lifeboat and fire safety training.

How do I transfer to College Station Corps of Cadets?
First, all students who wish to “change curriculum” from the Galveston campus to College Station must maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average, with at least 30 hours of academic credit. To transfer into some academic programs in College Station, a higher grade point average may be required. Students meeting the transfer requirements may apply to change curriculum to College Station.

Cadets transferring to the TAMU Corps of Cadets will have two options:
Cadets may join Squadron 18, the transition outfit, (for all transfer students regardless of service affiliation), where they will fulfill one semester as a fish before moving up to sophomore. Following the fish semester, the cadet will be allowed to move to another outfit or remain in Squadron 18.

Cadets may also choose to join the Cadet Corps and complete the entire four-year Corps experience (fish-sophomore-junior-senior) in College Station.
