Daily Ship's Report

We arrived off Catalina Island last night about 8 PM. Our arrival was a day and a half early due to the boiler
problems we experienced leaving Costa Rica. To make water with the heat provided from the main engines, the engines had to be run faster; hence the early arrival. Today was spent just drifting off Catalina to save fuel. In the afternoon we had a fire and boat drill and the boats were lowered to the water and taken for a spin to make sure everything was working properly and to give the cadets the experience of actually releasing the boats and using the motor or oars to propel the boats around at sea. The cadets rowing the boats were a little rusty at first but got better as they practiced.

The cadets have spent their day standing watch, taking their final test in deck training, and those on day work spent the day cleaning the ship for its arrival in Vallejo next Tuesday. However the most popular activity of the day was slipping away and calling home to parents or sweethearts.

Tomorrow and Sunday we run the "Catalina 500", which is an exercise where each senior cadet has the conn of the ship and must issue helm and engine orders to run a prescribed course and finally dock alongside a buoy. The senior cadets also will be launching and recovering the fast rescue boat and finally will spend some time in the engine room observing the engine orders from the bridge being carried out. Combine all of that activity with the weekend warriors being out and it should be a fun weekend.
