Daily Ship's Report

One week from today and the voyage will be over. It seems like just yesterday that we sailed. For further evidence that the end of the voyage is near, the U.S. Customs declarations forms were handed out today and meetings were held tonight to assist the cadets in filling them out correctly. Also the senior deck cadets took their written Seamanship Exam tonight. They will take the practical part of the exam during the week.

We are about halfway up the coast of lower California, so we will soon be back in the territorial waters of the U.S.

One bit of good news today. Our boiler is fixed. It has been broken for several days and everything the engineers did to fix it, failed until today--success. This is a motor ship and the boiler is not that important for the propulsion of the ship. The purpose to be of the boiler is to make fresh water. While the boiler was broken, the jacket water that cools the main engine was used to make fresh water. While the boiler was broken, the cadets and crew have been asked to take shorter showers, the laundries have been closed, and paper plates were used at meal times. to conserve water as much as possible.
