| Training
and day work was suspended today for the annual Sinbad Games on the ship.
Only watches and work necessary for the operation of the ship was done.
The day started off with Medusa 10K competition. Cadet Joseph Sebes took
second place and Cadet Ryan Vechan took 5th place in the competition. The
Sinbad Games consists of competitions in events made from the ordinary
training or work aboard ship. There were events in hawser toss, heaving
line toss, bucket brigade, bos'n chair climb, boiler suit hydro test, a
plumbers nightmare, lifeboat crank, blind knot tieing , and a search for
oscar. Each company sent a team to compete in each event. Division 1
Engineers took first place in the company competition. and Division 1 took
first place in the division competition. The closest competition of the
day was in the lifeboat crank. In this event the lifeboat is hand cranked
from the embarkation deck to the limit switches on the boat deck. The
competition was fierce with Division 1 Deck company beating out Division 2
Deck company by just 10 seconds. The funniest competition is the plumbers
nightmare. Junk pipe, pipe fittings flanges and valves are made up into an
apparatus about 8 feet long. There are many holes and leaks along the way.
A fire hose is fitted to one end and a pressure gauge is fitted to the
other end. The cadets are given a bucket of junk parts to fix the leaky
pipe with in 15 minutes time. Then the water is turned on and the pressure
checked. The highest pressure wins. Today the Division 1 Deck company won.
Also interesting among the winners was Division 1 Engineer company winning
the blind knot tieing contest. After the Sinbad Games, the stewards department cooked up a nice meal of grilled chicken and pork ribs for our Sunday afternoon BBQ on the fantail. It was a fitting end to a fun day. Captain Jack Smith Senior Lecturer Marine Transportation Department |
