Daily Ship's Report

We will be almost due south of our school's home, Galveston, Texas, this evening. We are about 120 miles off the Mexican coast and are sailing through an area called the Gulf of Tehuantepec which is notorious for high winds and rough seas. However the weather gods continue to favor us with fair winds and following seas.

The day work crews have been chipping away at the rust on the fore deck for the last two weeks. The chief mate decided that since today was a bright sunny day, it was very favorable for painting. After allowing all morning for the sun to dry up the moisture on the deck, he turned the entire day work division to on painting the finish coat of paint on the foredeck. Cadets Robert Cope, Blaine Garrity and Megan Klein were cutting in around the anchor windlass, rails, and the bitts. Cadets Luke Grundmeyer, Matthew Pippen, Jordan Higgins, and Trey Lindinger were manning the rollers. At the end of the day the foredeck looked like new with a shiny new coat of paint.

Cadets Larry Gardner, Malcolm Boucher, and Reuben Ganser were out getting star fixes tonight. Collin Gee was able to pick out Polaris (the North Star) out of the low clouds tonight to finish his star project. Cadets Shaun Quinn and Rolando Maydon were the ship's lookouts on the 4 to 8 watch and spotted two ships in shore of us. The tried call the ships on the VHF radio but the ships did not answer. Cadet Christopher Tiefenbrunn had better luck on the previous watch when he spotted a south bound ship. He called the ship and found out that the ship was coming from Japan and bound for New Orleans.
