| This
morning we arrived at Golfito, Costa Rica to pick up the ambassador to
Costa Rica and his two guests. Upon their arrival on board we heaved
anchor and headed for Cocos Island, which is about 300 miles out to sea.
Cocos Island is world's largest uninhabited island and is now part of
Costa Rica 's national park system and, in 1997, UNESCO named it a World
Heritage Site. Robert Louis Stevenson may have based his classic "Treasure
Island" on Cocos. The island is most famous for the priceless artifacts
and tons of gold bullion which was supposedly buried in its hillsides by
the pirates who made Cocos their home around 1820. The treasure, though
searched for by over 300 expeditions, has never been reported to have been
found. Would you report it if you found it? Many ships, including whalers, stopped at Cocos regularly until the mid-nineteenth century for fresh water, firewood and coconuts. Today, Cocos is known as one of the world's top scuba diving sites. It is famous for the large schools of hammerhead sharks and other large oceanic fish that come to its tropical waters. Cocos has been called one of the most beautiful islands in the world because of its luxuriant rain forest and sparkling waterfalls. In spite of all of this, Cocos remains a deserted island, inaccessible to most. Tomorrow will be a day for exploring Cocos Island for the cadets of the "Golden Bear". What a privilege!
