Daily Ship's Report

Today's fire and boat drill was much longer than usual. The simulated fire was in the engine room and the Emergency squad had to climb down an emergency escape hatch to get to the site of the simulated fire. The emergency squad got a real workout just going through the narrow opening with all of their firefighting gear on. They were happy to take off their sweaty gear as soon as the drill was over.

Another division has rotated into Deck Training and have kept the fantail of the ship awash in sea water fighting simulated fires today and will continue again tomorrow. Cadets Collin Gee, Adam Shuptar, Joe Keil, and Raymond Tinney were the persons in charge leading their fire teams into the simulated fires. Cadets Christopher Jones, Samantha Arnold, Justin Conway, and Matthew Gibson, as members of the fire teams, manned the fire hoses and operated the fire nozzles and fog applicators. As usual the favorite scenario of the day was connecting a 2 1/2 inch fire hose to the fire main and putting a full charge of water on it. It takes big guys to control this hose and Cadets Brian Herbert, Francisco Hernandez, Joshua Raines and Glen Younger did a fine job of directing the stream of water to where it was supposed to go.

Another division has rotated into day work and they are continuing to remove the rust spots on the foredeck. Manning the chipping hammers and needle guns under the direction of Cadet Michael Dirnbeck were Cadets Charles Jackson, Frank Composto, and Joseph Sebes. Cadets Kevin McDonald, Amanda McCall, Bryan Phillips, and Ben Riddick were putting the last primer coat and the finish coat of paint on the house and rails. Working in the paint locker to keep all the cadets supplied with the proper paint for each job were Cadets John Wortman, Jeff Harris, and James Gregory.
