| We continue to
have good weather as we proceed north towards our next port. Good weather
means that Chief Mate William Schmid can get lots of maintenance done on
the ship. Today the mate had Cadets Fallon Thorbin, Troy Baker, Joseph
Lindinger, and Michael Erskine chipping, wire brushing, and priming rust
spots on the foredeck. Cadet Luke Grundmeyer was climbing around on the
cranes and davits greasing all of the zerts. Cadets Sean Kelly and Ben
Watson cleaned out the paint locker and gave the deck a fresh coat of
paint of one color to replace the previous deck of many colors. In addition to supervising the work on deck, Bos'n Peter Mc Groarty was teaching the cadets how to rig and use a Bosuns chair today. Cadets Justin Heflin and Jordan Higgins rigged a bosun chair and lowered themselves over the side of the after house so they could use a needle gun on rust around the windows. From the deck above Cadets William Butler and R.J. Young tended the safety lines for the harnesses the cadets in the bosun chairs were wearing. Cadets Megan Klein, Matthew Pippen, Roy Robbins, and Ronald Williams continued to put another coat of primer on the overhead around the quarterdeck. This was the last coat of primer and the cadets should be able to begin putting the finish coat paint on tomorrow. But maintenance on a ship the size of the "Golden Bear" is never ending. When one job is finished, another job is waiting to be done. Captain Jack Smith Senior Lecturer Marine Transportation Department |
