| The wind and
swells have picked up today. We are taking a little spray over the bow and
on the starboard main deck aft when a large swell hits us. Those areas of
the ship are now off limits to everyone for safety reasons. The ship is
still riding well because the majority of the weather we are encountering
is from ahead. The temperature has been around 60 degrees all day, but the
wind chill factor makes the temperature seem a lot colder than it actually
is. For the most part today has been a very nice, cold, crisp winter day.
Many cadets had successful star plots this morning and evening. Also the
sun has been out with a beautiful horizon all day. Today has been very
good for celestial navigation. Off to our left, the coast of Chile is visible. There is a dark mountain range that is closest to us and then the Andes Mountains tower over those mountains. The Andes Mountains are completely covered with snow and look like a picture postcard against the blue sky. Tomorrow morning we arrive at Valparaiso. We are to pick up the pilot at 0730. Rigging the pilot ladder and assisting the pilot on board will be Cadets Amy Luna, Christopher Kubala, and Justin Conway. Cadets Samantha Arnold and Glen Younger will be part of the crew standing by the anchors as we enter port. When we arrive alongside the dock, Cadets Joe Keil, Adam Sokol, Andrew Callahan, and Robert Turner will be working with the forward mooring line gang to tie the bow of the ship to the dock. Working with the after mooring line gang to tie the stern to the dock will be Cadets Ross Macmurdo, Adam Shuptar, Ryan Maas, and Charles Jackson. Once we are tied up to the dock, Cadets Travis Baily, Matthew Gibson, Josh Raines, and Shaun Quinn will put out the gangway so that the cadets can go back and forth to the shore. According to the port briefing given last night, Valparaiso has much for our cadets to see and do Captain Jack Smith Senior Lecturer Marine Transportation Department |
