| The Peru
Maritime Academy had their band playing and a contingent of cadets
standing at attention on the dock to greet us on our arrival in Callao,
Peru. Many of the Peruvian Cadets visited our ship during our stay in
Callao. On Saturday, The Peru Maritime Academy hosted 67 of our cadets and
faculty for a tour of their campus. They are very proud of their
facilities. They served us a lunch of finger sandwiches, cakes and a
variety of their national drinks. After lunch we were escorted to a large
room where the Peruvian Cadets had exhibits set up of the different
cultural areas of Peru. When everyone had had a chance to see the
exhibits, the Peruvian students began giving our cadets the exhibited
items for souvenirs. Next we were entertained with local dances from each province. The dancers were dressed in full local costume. To end the show, the dancers left their partners and began teaching our cadets the steps to their dances. The whole dance floor was eventually filled with cadets dancing. On Sunday, many of our cadets found themselves caught up in a huge parade. Peru's Independence Day is July 28th, and they celebrated Sunday afternoon with a parade and fireworks. It was impossible to cross the street and the parade route and side streets were jammed with people. .The parade lasted over 3 hours and had elaborate floats, bands, beauty queens, dancers, mimes, and freedom fighters At 8 AM this morning the ship sailed, leaving behind Peru and heading south for Valparaiso, Chile. The day has been spent regaining our sea legs and getting back into the routine of watch, training, and day work. Captain Jack Smith Senior Lecturer Marine Transportation Department |
