| Greetings
from the Southern Hemisphere. The ship crossed the equator today at 1146
hours. Cadet Travis Baily was the Cadet Watch Officer (CWO) at the time.
Assisting him were cadets Collin Gee and Reuben Ganser. Senior cadets
always like to tell the underclassmen stories or untruths. The story
circulating last night was that there was a big difference in the height
of the water between the northern and southern hemispheres and that the
ship would fall into the southern hemisphere when we crossed the line. Not
many underclassmen fell for that story. Also on watch today when we
crossed the line were cadets Christopher Kubala, Ryan Mass and Andrew
Callahan. In the Deck Training class today Cadets Jeff Harris and Charles Jackson were getting a refresher course on how to properly don and operate a SCBA. They learned how to use a SCBA at fire school last year. Cadets Eddie Compass, Stephen Conway, Ben Riddick, and John Seckman were practicing lowering and raising #1 lifeboat as part of the survival craft class. The cadets also had to start the engine by hand cranking it. Cadet Compass' ego was somewhat crushed as the engine would not start for him until his fourth try. With the large number of cadets on board, a lot of maintenence is being accomplished. Cadet Joseph Lindinger was cuttin off unnecessary brackets on the bulkheads today. Cadet Megan Klein was feathering in the painted edges with a wire brush. Cadet Sean Kelly followed them with a coat of primer on the bare metal.
