Daily Ship's Report

Our last night in Zihuatanejo produced a little excitement. Between eleven and midnight the wind increased to about 50 to 60 knots and our ship began dragging her anchor. Fortunately, the strong wind lasted only a few minutes and everything returned to normal. On leaving Zihuatanejo the weather reports showed a hurricane about 500 miles from us heading for Hawaii.
Since we are heading southeast, we are in no danger from the hurricane, but the thought that we would be dodging hurricanes all summer as happened last year on our summer cruise crossed many of our minds. The ship is rolling due to the swells from this weather system, but are easing as we get further from it.

It has been hot and humid until three this afternoon when the ship went through a rain squall. It quickly cooled off the ship and to the cadets delight all outside work had to cease due to the drenching rain. Cadets Sean Kelly, MD Alam, Bryan English and Christopher Holley were learning how to handle morning lines when the rain came. They had to stow the lines below decks before they could get out of the rain.

Adam Shuptar was in charge of a detail to wash the ships mops this morning.
When the ships mops get really dirty, they are tied onto a line and dragged behind the ship in the wheel wash. When the mops are clean, they are rinsed with fresh water, dried, and are ready for use again. Bill Tracey was supervising a crew of cadets which included Samantha Arnold who grinding the rust on the underside of the rails and Brian Herbert who was wire brushing rust spots on the overhead..

It is good to be back at sea again.
