Zihuantanejo, Mexico The ship arrived Sunday July 9 to Zihuantanejo. This is an anchor port so we are not at a dock. After anchoring, the gangway and landing platform have to be readied. The two boats that are to be used as launches to ferry all of the cadets and crew who have liberty have to be lifted from their cradles on deck and put in the water. Both of these operations are somewhat tedious due to the ship rolling while the apparatus is hanging from a crane. The ships company is divided into three divisions. In port, one division is granted liberty, one has to work, and one stands watch. After room inspection, the liberty division can go ashore. The day work division's work is usually accomplished by noon and they can then go ashore. The watch division is has to stay aboard to handle all of the ships needs for that day. Many of our cadets assisted with the work details for arrival. Helping to anchor the vessel were Michael Dirnbeck, Joseph Sebes, and James Gregory. Operating the boats to ferry cadets and crew back and forth to the shore are Adam Sokol, Scott Stanton, John Edwards, and Raymond Tinney. Assisting with the gangway and boat landing platform were Caroline Purvis, Bryan Phillips, and Frank Composto. Helping to launch the liberty boats were David Little, Kevin McDonald, Drew McKinney, Joel Soileau and Jonathan Schiappa. To operate a ship like the Golden Bear with a large number of cadets and crew on it requires that they all work together to accomplish the final goal.. Our cadets and the California cadets are all doing a fine job. Captain Jack Smith Senior Lecturer Marine Transportation Department |
