| Today was
change over day for watch, day work, and deck training. For those cadets who had been standing watch, they now are doing deck training and at the next change over they will move on to day work. By moving to another job every 3 or 4 days, each cadet stays fresh and eager to learn their new task. We are getting far enough south along the Mexican coast that we are meeting northbound ship traffic from the Panama Canal. It is interesting to look out and see other ships plying their trade and our cadets are required to call each ship sighted to find out who they are, where they are going and what their cargo is. Even though yesterday was July Fourth, our cadets spent they day doing their usual routine. There are really no holidays at sea and everyone must do their job to keep the ship moving. However, we did celebrate our country's Independence Day by flying our flag high and having an old fashioned barbeque last evening. Even the Captain was out flipping hamburgers. The menu included burgers with all the trimmings, hot dogs, chicken, chips, beans, potato salad, watermelon, and a cake decorated like the U.S. flag. For the evenings entertainment, there was patriotic music and a pyrotechnic display after dark. Our old expired flares lit up the sky as well as many fireworks displays do back home. During the day, another pod of whales was spotted and everyone stopped work to have a good look. Needless to say some of the work supervisors were not to happy about the work stoppage. We continue to have perfect weather with little movement of the vessel in the seas. Captain Jack Smith Senior Lecturer Marine Transportation Department |
