On Friday January 18, 2008 the Texas Maritime Academy formally dedicated the William C. Hearn Honor Guard. The guard was dedicated in honor of Hearn for his over thirty-three years of service to the Texas Maritime Academy and Texas A&M University at Galveston.

Letter of Request for Official Dedication
Cadet Matthew White, Corps Commander
December 13, 2007

Sir,

This memo is meant to request the formal dedication of the newly formed Texas Maritime Academy Honor Guard. I believe that the Honor Guard will develop into a true tradition at TAMUG and I believe that it is only appropriate that the Honor Guard be dedicated to someone who exemplifies tradition, dedication, and leadership. I believe that Mr. Hearn exemplifies these qualities and I believe that with his upcoming retirement it is only appropriate that the Honor Guard be dedicated in his honor.

Having been with the university since 1974 (as an administrator) Mr. Bill Hearn truly represents the history of this campus. Over his tenure here he has been responsible for the Corps of Cadets, ship operations, has served as senior university representative aboard the Texas Clipper I and as the interim C.E.O. of the campus on two occasions. I am sure that it is clear that he has dedicated countless hours to this university and to Texas Maritime Academy. For this reason I would like to dedicate the TMA Honor Guard to Mr. Bill Hearn. I suggest “The William C. Hearn Honor Guard” as the official title.

I believe that this dedication would be a very fitting tribute to the leadership, tradition and dedication Mr. Hearn has shown in his tenure here at TAMUG. I also believe that it has a real value to the current students here at TAMUG, and this value is what will give the Honor Guard its initial traditional value on campus. This value will serve as a jumping off point which will lead the William C. Hearn Honor Guard into the future, carrying Mr. Hearn’s good name along with it.

Thank you,

Matthew J. White
