A "zephyr" is a breeze from the west or southwest.

straits of gibralterToday is a special day for Mate Lane, it is his birthday. Mate Smith posted signs last night stating that "Mate Lane, the ancient mariner, would be celebrating his birthday today." Cadets celebrated this special occasion by singing happy birthday for his wake up call this morning at 0700, and then when he went on the bridge at 0745, several platoons of cadets sang happy birthday to him.

Currently, we are abeam of Cabo de Sao Vincente, Portugal.  Early on Friday morning, we will transit the Straits of Gibraltar to the Mediterranean Sea where we will bunker in the port of Algeciras before continuing to San Juan.

This summer, the cadets have commented what a great job the galley has done cooking.
