Trivia

In the olden days for disobedience or dereliction of duty, crewmembers were keelhauled.  What does this term mean, which navies administered this punishment and when?

Yesterday's  Answer:
During the days of the British rule, when ships carried passengers from Britain to India, the wealthy preferred the port side going to India because it was the east side of the ship and did not get as hot.  Returning from India and going back to England the wealthy preferred the starboard side because of the easterly exposure.  "Port out, starboard home" became known as "posh" for the wealthy passengers.

bridgeThis morning at 0200, we entered heavy fog which lifted around 0730.  On the bridge, Cadet Harper skillfully navigated the ship through the fog using dead reckoning as the lookouts on the bow and bridge wings stayed bundled up in the chilly 41° weather.  Cadet Compass, the bow lookout, observed porpoises playing in the bow waves of the ship as we proceeded through the dense fog.

At 1215, cadets were on the flybridge shooting local apparent noon in hopes of getting a half star day completed.  Some cadets such as Cadet Passeretti took the day off from shooting stars to rest and relax.

At 1500, barbecue was served in the hanger.  Cadets/crew had their choice of brisket, chopped beef, or chicken.  This summer, the galley crew has done an excellent job of cooking.  The Corps Commander, Cadet Curtis stated he truly enjoyed the barbecue.  He finished the barbecue off with a big bowl of strawberry ice cream.

During the barbeque, Mate Lane, Mate Smith, Mate Bullion, First Engineer Hutchinson could be seen sitting together telling sea stories and reminiscing about their careers of going to sea.  Mate Smith held the attention of the others as he told sea stories of his days aboard an ammunition ship during Vietnam War.
