Trivia

Sailors do not use the terms of left and right, instead they use the nautical term port and starboard.  Where does the expression port/starboard originate from?

Yesterday's  Answer:
The lucida is the brightest star amongst a group of stars in the sky.  The lucida of Ursa Minor (a.k.a. Little Dipper) is Polaris, commonly referred to as the North Star.

safetyAfter the 0615 cleaning station inspections, cadets ate breakfast and reported for the 0730 formation.  After formation, cadets started maintenance on deck.  The sound of needle guns can be heard throughout the ship as cadets needle gun the flybridge and work their way down.

Engine cadets are working in the chief engineer's cabin fixing a leak in an overhead pipe which has caused his cabin to become extremely wet.

Cadets were not able to shoot stars this morning because of overcast skies.  Currently the weather is 68° with overcast skies, and a 3' to 4' following sea.

This evening, cadets will be preparing their cabins and uniforms for the weekly cabin/personnel inspection on Saturday.  After cleaning stations are inspected, cadets will have a personnel inspection at 0730 in the morning.  At 1000 a fire and boat drill will be held in which cadets/crew will don their survival suits during the boat drill.  At 1100, emergency steering gear drill will commence.  The emergency steering gear drill requires the engineers to steer the ship from aft steering while they receive helm commands from the bridge.  At 1300, cadets will have their quarters inspected by officers for cleanliness to ensure all belongings are secure.
