The adventures aboard the Texas
Clipper II continue. Cadets and crew are very excited about the
unscheduled port of call in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Our estimated
time of arrival to Port Everglades (Ft. Lauderdale) is 0800 Friday
morning. Upon arrival, technicians are going to inspect the
governor on the starboard engine in order to determine why both
engines cannot be clutched simultaneously.
Upon docking, cadets and crew not on watch will be granted liberty
until 2400 Friday night. The sailing board will be set for
sailing at 0800 Saturday morning for Cork, Ireland.
Please note that
the University will be closed Friday, June 11 in observance of the
official day of mourning in remembrance of President Ronald Reagan.
However, the website will be updated to keep family and friends
informed of the Texas Clipper II status.
This afternoon at
1325 an emergency steering gear drill was held with engine cadets
steering the ship from aft steering by compass. After a few minutes
of zigzagging, the engine cadets did a great job of holding a course
by compass alone.
Cadets in the
engineering company received five merit points each for having the
most improved cleaning station aboard the ship after the field day.
They did a great job of cleaning their designated spaces during the
field day.
On the bridge, the
senior cadets in charge of the watch, Cadets Pistor, Castorena, and
Early, have done a great job of navigating the ship through the
fishing boats off the coast. The junior navigators have been busy
taking ranges and bearings off land in order to determine the ship’s
position.
Today has been
overcast and muggy with calm seas. Unfortunately, due to cloudy
weather, cadets could not do a star day today.
