Internet Connection Help For Dorms

Computer Connections In Dorms use Cisco Clean Access
When connecting to the TAMUG network from the Dorms you will be required to download and install Cisco Clean Access and use that to authenticate with the network. Cisco Clean Access checks that your computer has anti-virus installed in order to protect the network from attack.

Checking the settings on the Network card is important in order to make a connection. This is done by viewing the properties of the network card. To do this go to the control panel, click network connections, right click local area connection and choose "Properties", select properties. On the general tab, select internet protocol (TCP\IP) and click properties, verify the following:

  1. Obtain IP address automatically
  2. Use DHCP for WINS resolution
  3. Obtain DNS address automatically

If you use a Apple Mac, Linux or would like to connect an Xbox or Playstation to the network, bring the MAC address of the device to CIS (CLB Rm115) along with a name and contact number and we will enter it into clean access so your device can access the network, alternatively use this online form to submit the information to the helpdesk: Register MAC Address Online.

If this get a connection, great! Surf on. If not, check for any mistakes or move on to troubleshooting steps. Please check the following BEFORE you call CIS for help.

  1. Is your Ethernet cable securely attached to your computer and to the jack in the wall. If not, make it secure, also try a different cable.
  2. Check the cable or its end connectors and determine if its damaged or pinched/crimped/bent? If so, you may need to replace the cable.
  3. Check your network card for a proper install? You can check this by going to the Control Panel and choosing System. Click on the Hardware tab, click Device Manager. Is your card listed under Network Adapters? If it is and there are not any yellow exclamation points, your computer thinks that it is properly installed. If there are items with yellow exclamation points, check to see if any are for the network card. Even if they are not, they may be conflicting with your card. If your card is not working and you cannot get it properly installed, you will need to contact the manufacturer for support.
  4. Check your roommate’s computer for a working connection? If so, try your computer in that jack. If it then works, call CIS and ask that they come check the jack and make necessary repairs. If not, proceed with the next step.

Basic Requirements For Connection

Wireless Connection - Jellyfish:
Wireless connectivity is available in Hulabaloo, Oceans and Mariner Dorms via the "Jellyfish" network. Wireless is NOT AVAILABLE at University Apartments or Pelican Island Private Student Housing.

Normally when you turn on your computer it will come up with a message saying "Wireless Network Detected". By clicking on this box you can see available networks and select "connect". You want to ensure you select "Jellyfish" as the network. Alternatively you will see an icon in the bottom right hand side of the taskbar for the wireless device, right click on it and either "view wireless networks" or " search for wireless networks". If "Jellyfish" is located, you can select it and connect.

Note: you will get a higher speed connection if you use a wired connection instead of wireless.

Wired Connection:

Your computer will need a 10/100 ethernet card, we recommend the 3Com brand, you will also need an Ethernet cable about 15-25’ foot long. Most computers will come with a network card already installed.

Normally when you plug your network cable into the wall jack and the other end into your PC, the network connection will be automatically detected.

Sometimes however, you may have to adjust your settings as they may have been set differently depending on how you connected to the internet previously.

If after trying the above you still can't get access try connecting to the other network wall jack and see if that works. If your PC works on the other wall jack, contact CIS to come and repair the faulty jack.

If you cannot get access on either wall jack, bring your laptop or desktop to CIS in CLB Room 115 or put in a request for a CIS technician to come to your room and rectify the problem.
