Student Guide To C.I.S. Resources And Assistance

The staff of Computing Information Services department would like to welcome you to TAMUG. We have prepared some instructions and guidelines to make your experience as a computer user at TAMUG as easy and convenient as possible. Please feel free to make any suggestions on anything that you would like to see added to this documentation to assist students entering TAMUG for the first time to get started as computer users on campus.

MOSQUITO NET:

TAMUG has an intranet site that is used to keep faculty, staff, and students updated with information pertaining to our campus. You will find some very useful information there and more extensive answers to some of your questions that are not covered in this handout. So, please check us out at:

http://mnet.tamug.edu

STUDENT WEB PAGES:

Please check out the guidelines for setting up student web pages on our intranet site http://mnet.tamug.edu.

EMAIL:

All enrolled students at TAMUG are given an account on our email server tamug.edu. These accounts are automatically generated during the first few days of the semester with information extracted from the Student Information Management System (SIMS). Your username will be your netID.

When addressing someone on the TAMUG email server from on campus, you only need to use the TAMUG username. When addressing someone on the TAMUG email server from off campus, you must use the full email address.

Example:

From campus to another TAMUG email account:mjs4321
From off campus to a TAMUG email account:mjs4321@neo.tamu.edu

All campus business pertaining to you as a student will be forwarded to your TAMUG email account. If you have another email account that you prefer to use, it is your responsibility to forward your TAMUG email to your other email account.

Instructions for forwarding email from tamug.edu :

1. Telnet to tamug.edu

2. Login in with your username and password.

3. ENTER forward mynew@otheraccount.com  (ex: howdydo@hotmail.com)

4. Logout

Now all your email that comes to TAMUG will be forwarded to

mynew@otheraccount.com

When you want to stop forwarding your mail.

1. Telnet to tamug.edu

2. Login in with your username and password.

3. ENTER unforward

For assistance in forwarding your TAMUG email to another account, please call the C.I.S. Learning Resource Center at 4441 or the Helpdesk at 4480.

We recommend MS OUTLOOK as an email software package to run on your personal computer, but to retrieve email from the TAMUG lab PC’s or any other PC on campus, we recommend using aggmail.

Aggmail

To retrieve your mail from your TAMUG email account, we recommend using aggmail (an email program something like HOT MAIL). You can access aggmail from any web browser (Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc.)

To access Aggmail:

http://aggmail.tamug.edu

At the login prompt type in your full email account (example: mjs4321@tamug.edu). The password is your TAMUG email password.

INTERNET ACCESS:

This section pertains to students living in the dorms who want to set up their PC’s for internet access. You will need a 10/100 ethernet card, we recommend the 3Com brand, you will also need an Ethernet cable about 15-25’ foot long.

Setting Up WIN95 or WIN98 for Ethernet

Select the Network icon in the Control Panel.

Specify your network adapter

Select Add in the Network Window and you will see a Select Network Adapters window.

Select Adapter and click on Add

Select the manufacturer of the adapter card with which your system is equipped.

You will see a list of all adapter cards. Select the card that you have and double click. If it is not on the list, you need a driver disk from the manufacturer.

The Network Window now has the adapter name, as well as several services and protocols loaded by default.

**To find out what kind of adapter you have choose System from Control Panel, choose Device Mgr tab, and click on Network adapters in the list.

Select the network protocol.

Again - select Add in the Network Window.

Select Protocol and click on Add

                Select Microsoft

Move to the right Window and select TCP/IP and click OK

Select the TCPIP entry in the Network Window and click

                Select Properties

Select “Obtain an IP address automatically”

Select the WINS Configuration Tab and make sure that “Use DHCP for WINS Resolution” is chosen.

Select DNS Configuration and make sure that “Disable DNS” is chosen.

                Now click OK

·         On open desktop right click and choose New Shortcut. In the field type in winipcfg. Click OK OK.

Run winipcfg by double clicking on it (you must have rebooted since choosing DHCP). You should see IP and hardware address information. If not click on Renew All. If IP addresses don’t appear check your cabling. If this appears OK you may need to contact the computer center.

If your connection still doesn’t work, right click on my computer, choose properties then click on Device Manager tab. Scroll down to see if any yellow “!” are present. If they are you have a Windows resource conflict and need to get help reinstalling devices or removing any un-needed services.

If you should run into any problems, or need help setting up your connection please call Helpdesk  Ext-4480 to have one of the CIS technician's stop by to help you

INTERNET INSTRUCTIONS FOR OFF CAMPUS RESIDENTS

Anyone with a NetID and password can set themselves up for VPN access. If, however, your password has not been reset within the last six months, it may need resetting in NEO. For instructions on setting up a VPN account please see the following pages:

Aggnews provides announcements concerning the Texas A&M Galveston campus via email. It is our policy to keep all faculty, staff and students on it so we can quickly reach them with important information. We are trying to carefully balance what we release to ensure that it is information that is timely, brief and of interest to a large group of the community.

These are the guidelines that we use to determine when an Aggnews message is appropriate.

1. The message is related to university business such as information from official clubs, organizations and departments of the university.

2. The information needs to be quickly distributed. This includes items such as announcement of an event or a time sensitive situation like the bridge closing for repairs.

3. The item should be of interest to a significant percent of the people who will receive it. We can send messages to just staff, faculty, students or any combination of these groups.

4. Students with announcements/events to have sent via Aggnews should be forwarded to Todd Sutherland (sutherlt@tamug.edu) in the Student Activities office before submitting to Aggnews. It will be reviewed by their office then forwarded to Aggnews from there.

If it does not meet the above criteria, and does not need to be quickly distributed then it can be distributed via a bulletin board or other publications in one of our campus newsletters.

Submissions for Aggnews must be received no later than 10:00 a.m. on the day they are to appear. Early submissions are encouraged. Aggnews is normally distributed between 4:00 - 4:30p daily.

Only one Aggnews will be sent for an event, reminders or multiple notices will not be sent. Campus wide voice mail messages will only be used for emergencies.

The Computer Services Coordinator will review ALL Aggnews requests based on these criteria. If she feels it doesn't meet these criteria she will forward it to the Director of Computing and Information Services, who will normally determine when an Aggnews is appropriate. If there is any question, he will forward the message to the Executive Associate Vice President/Associate vice President for Student Affairs for a determination.
