Internet Service Providers
Texas A&M
University @ Galveston no longer offers dial up services. If you require
internet access please use the following links to help you determine the type of
service and features available in your area. If you need access to on-campus
websites or services from a remote location you can request a VPN account that
will be used in conjunction with the service provided by your internet company.
Dial-up:
Dial up offers low speed internet access,
normally up to a maximum of 56Kbps. This is suitable for checking email but not
very good for surfing the internet. Things to look for are unlimited usage,
nationwide access numbers, provides some email addresses and email storage,
provides space for personal website and either online or phone support.
Providers:
Netzero
WorldVerge
PeoplePC
DSL:
DSL utilizes your existing home telephone and
with the use of special line filters is able to obtain speeds from 768Kps up to
3Mbps. The higher the speed, the more the monthly cost. You simply plug the
filters into any telephone outlet that has a phone plugged in and plug the
phones into the filters. Then the DSL modem is able to share the phone line
providing internet service while you are still able to make and receive
telephone calls.

Verizon
AT&T Yahoo
High Speed Internet:
High speed internet is normally provided by your cable
company. It can provide speeds up to 8Mbps. If you already have digital cable TV
with your cable provider then the per month cost is less than the rate if you
just had high speed internet on its own.

Mobile Broadband Card:
Another option for reasonably high speed
internet access (up to 1.4Mbps) is a mobile broadband card that fits into a
laptop computer. It utilizes the current cell phone network to connect you to
the internet. You can use this internet connection anywhere you receive cell
phone signal. This is one of the slightly more expensive options but you have
the freedom to access the internet while away from your home unlike Dial up, DSL
and Cable Modem.
Providers:
AT&T
Sprint
VPN
(Virtual Private Network):
You will need a VPN
connection if you need access to mnet.tamug.edu or the library resources from
off campus.
Staff and Faculty needing VPN access should request it by coming into CIS (CLB
Room 115) or contacting Tony Quigg at x4961 (quiggt@tamug.edu.)
