Request To Keep A Computer Running Windows XP On the TAMUG Campus
After 12 years, support for Windows XP will end on April 8, 2014. There will be no more security updates or technical support for the Windows XP operating system. It is very important that users migrate to a modern operating system such as Windows 7 (preferred).
Windows XP machines will become targets of computer hackers as there will be no more security updates to protect these machines from attack. As such, we will no longer allow Windows XP machines to connect to the campus network, nor will it be allowed to obtain internet access.
If you choose to retain your Windows XP machines for your research or business continuity, (example: if the machines are used to run a piece of lab equipment, or if it uses proprietary software which is only compatible with Windows XP) then that use will be permitted once a registration form is filed with TAMUG Information Services, and the network connection to that Windows XP machine has be discontinued.
