Server Backup Policy
Currently, the Information Systems department of Texas A&M University at Galveston is backing up critical systems. These systems include, but are not limited to, the University email system, the University server for local databases, and the University shared file server. One backup of each system is taken daily with the exception of the email system which is backed up every 30 minutes. These backups are then subject to the current “Roll Up” procedure to reduce the amount of storage space required for our backup processes. This “Roll Up” procedure is as follows:
The exception to the above “Roll Up” procedure is the email server which follows the below “Roll Up” procedure:
In addition to the above backups, we also backup the Appassure backup server at the end of each month. This backup is copied to a series of tapes and is stored in a safe in another campus building. These backups tapes are kept for one year.
Verification of Backups:
Backups are to be tested every 6 months unless a system has had to have a data restoration in the time between normal testing. In the case where data restoration had to occur for business continuity reasons, this will suffice as the 6 monthly test.
