TAMUG Password Policy

User authentication is a means to control who has access to an information resource system. Controlling the access is necessary for any information resource. The confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information can be lost when access is gained by a non-authorized entity. This, in turn, may result in negative impacts such as loss of revenue, liability, loss of trust, or embarrassment to the university.

Password Expiration

Password expiration will ensure compliance with University Rule 29.01.03.M1.14 and other administrative procedures.  Your TAMUG Domain password will expire once a year.

Your TAMUG Domain password must be at least eight (8) characters and at most thirty-two (32) characters long.

It must meet the following conditions:

o   Passwords must contain at least one (1) UPPERCASE letter
o   Passwords must contain at least one (1) lowercase letter
o   Passwords must contain at least one (1) Number or one (1) Special Character
o   Passwords must contain only the following characters:  a-z, A-Z, 0-9, ‘%!#^&*()-_=+[{|}]:`,<.>?/@;
o   Old Passwords may not be immediately reused.

We offer these suggestions to help manage your passwords:

o   For PC users in the future as your password expiration time is drawing closer you will be prompted to change your password when you first log into your TAMUG computer.
o   You can change your NetID password at the same time so that your passwords on these two accounts will expire at the same time.
o   If you forget your password and enter it six (6) times incorrectly, your account will be temporarily locked for twenty (20) minutes.  You can contact Information Services to have your account UNLOCKED or you can wait the twenty (20) minutes and try again.

If you have any questions or concerns please email helpdesk@tamug.edu or call (409) 740-4714 and a Help Ticket will be opened for you and assigned to the next available support staff.
