High resolution photos of the Yucatan Peninsula from space
MODIS (or Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) is
the key instrument aboard the Terra (EOS AM-1) satellite. Terra MODIS is viewing
the entire Earth's surface every to 2 days, acquiring data in 36 spectral bands,
or groups of wavelengths. The MODIS Land Rapid Response system has been
developed to provide rapid access to MODIS data globally, with initial emphasis
on 250 m color composite imagery. Images on this page are derived from the
MODIS Land Rapid Response system
website.
The first row of images shown below was derived from an individual 250 m
resolution color composite. The image on the left shows a lower resolution
version of the whole photo with the Yucatan Peninsula including Mexico, Belize,
Guatemala and Honduras; the center image is a blow-up of the Riviera Maya; while
the right image is an enlargement of the Belize coast and atolls. Links to
original images at several resolutions from the MODIS Land Rapid Response
website are provided.

CARTERRA Online contains a vast archive of international data acquired by
ground stations worldwide and IKONOS, the world's first one-meter resolution,
commercial imaging satellite, launched on September 24, 1999. Images on this
page came from the
Merida page of the
Space
Imaging gallery.
Each row of images shown below was derived from adjacent photographs showing the
"ring of cenotes" located south of Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. The first image in
each row is a lower resolution version of the whole photo, while the center and
right images are enlargements showing ring cenotes.
Cenote Sabak-Ha,
one of the deepest caves in Yucatan, is in the center of the right photo in the
row immediately below. Links to the original images at the Space Imaging website
and coordinates for the corners of the whole photograph are provided.
