International Freshman Admissions


You are a freshman if you:

  • are a student without college credit or
  • earned college credit prior to high school graduation (dual credit/early college high school)
You are an international freshman if you:
  • are not a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or
  • are not graduating from a Texas high school after three years in residence in Texas (please review Senate Bill 1528)

Application Requirements

  • ADMISSIONS APPLICATION at ApplyTexas.org
    • The name entered on the ApplyTexas application must match the name on your passport. If your name does not fit in the space provided, enter as many characters as the space will allow.
  • $90 PROCESSING FEE (nonrefundable/subject to change)
    • PREFERRED > pay through ApplyTexas
    • OTHER METHODS: check or money order by mail
      • Checks or money orders (U.S. dollars) should be made payable to Texas A&M University at Galveston. Checks or money orders are accepted provided they display an agency bank in the United States and have magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) routing numbers at the bottom.
    • FEE WAIVER: International applicants are not eligible for an application fee waiver
  • OFFICIAL HIGH SCHOOL TRANSCRIPT
    • Submit an official high school or senior secondary transcript according to the education system of your country (generally the last three to four years).
    • If you have attended multiple schools (including US accredited schools) then a transcript is required from each institution.
    • If you transferred your foreign credits to a US school then only the US transcript is needed.
    • If your educational system includes O-levels and A-levels then the completed O-level results and projected A-level results must be received.
    • If graduated from high school an official transcript is required; it must include senior courses, a graduation plan and date of graduation.
    • To be considered official:
      • Transcript(s) must have an original signature of a school official (Registrar, Principal, Controller of Examinations or the Ministry of Education) or an original school seal.
      • All foreign transcripts must include an English translation prepared by a recognized translation service and include all original seals and/or signatures.
        • PREFERRED > transcript can be uploaded in AIS (final high school transcripts may not be uploaded through AIS)
        • OTHER METHOD: mail
        • Faxed or e-mailed copies will not be accepted.
  • OFFICIAL SAT or ACT Scores (including Writing scores)
    • Texas A&M Galveston SAT code is 6835 and ACT code is 6592.
    • The highest composite or total score from a single test date will be considered for admission.

  • PROOF OF ENGLISH PROFICIENCY
    • Applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit proof of English proficiency, which is satisfied by one of the following:
      • a minimum TOEFL score of: 550 for paper-based testing (p-BT) or 80 internet-based testing (i-BT)
      • a minimum SAT Critical Reading (Verbal) score of 500
      • a minimum ACT English score of 21
      • a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 overall band
      • completing all four years in a high school within the U.S.
      • applicants who are citizens of the following countries will be exempt from the English proficiency requirement:

Further Steps to Complete

  • Activate your NetID. After you have applied, you will use your NetID to login to many campus resources. 
  • Track your Status.The Applicant Information System (AIS) allows you to see exactly where your application is in the process.
  • Get more information. The Howdy Portal is a one-stop site for news, resources and student information. 
  • If you are interested in participating in the Texas A&M Maritime Academy, another application and physical will be submitted.  All Marine Transportation majors must join the Texas A&M Maritime Academy License Option program.

If Admitted

Accept your place at Texas A&M University at Galveston by registering for your New Student Conference. The following documents will be required for international students that are admitted:
  • Declaration and Certification of Finances and Foreign Student’s Advisor’s Report
    • A Financial Resource Statement is sent with a letter of acceptance. This form must be completed and returned to Texas A&M before the Certificate of Eligibility (I-20 or IAP-66) is issued. The Foreign Student Advisor’s Report is also mailed with the acceptance letter to all International applicants who are attending a school in the United States.
  • Advance Deposit 
    • Because of monetary restrictions in some countries, a full year’s expenses may be required as a deposit from some accepted applicants. When the student enrolls, the deposit is applied to the first semester expenses. The deposit is refunded to admitted applicants who do not attend Texas A&M Galveston.
  • English Verification/Certification
    • Texas A&M requires International undergraduate students to demonstrate the ability to speak, write and understand the English language. Undergraduate students may meet this requirement in one of four ways:
      • Official TOEFL score of 600 or higher (computer based score: 250);
      • Have an official SAT Verbal of 480 (400 prior to April 1, 1995 testing), or ACT English of 19 and attended grades nine through twelve of U.S. secondary education and graduate from a U.S. high school;
      • Transfer from an accredited U.S. institution of higher education with at least 30 semester credit hours, including the equivalent to Texas A&M ENGL 104; or 
      • Achieve English Language Proficiency Verification by taking the English Language Proficiency Examination (ELPE) prior to registration for the first semester at Texas A&M University. If remedial English classes are necessary, it will extend the time required to complete a degree.

International Transfer Admissions


An international transfer applicant:

  • is not a citizen or permanent resident of the United States (or applicant for permanent residency), and
  • has not graduated from a Texas high school after three years of residence in Texas. (If this applies to you, please apply as a U.S. transfer applicant based on Senate Bill 1528.)
  • is an applicant seeking the attainment of a bachelor’s degree
  • has graduated from high school or equivalent
  • has enrolled in a post-secondary institution since graduating from high school, and
  • is not eligible for readmission (has never enrolled at Texas A&M University as an undergraduate degree-seeking student).

  • OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS AND RECORDS
    • Submit official transcripts from all post-secondary (university and college-level) courses taken. You will also need to submit all official secondary or high school transcripts according to the educational system of your country (generally the last three to four years of secondary education). The final transcript and high school diploma must be received by the application closing date.
    • To ensure that your official transcripts and other supporting documents are processed in a timely and efficient manner, please include the appropriate Document ID Sheet with all documents you submit in support of your application. If you wish to submit your application fee by check or money order please use the alternate payment form.
      • If you have attended more than one post-secondary college/university, we require an official transcript from each school, including universities attended in the U.S. College work from one institution posted on the transcript of another institution will not be accepted. Copies of official foreign transcripts on file at a previously attended U.S. institution are accepted, provided that the copies are verified by the U.S. institution as those accepted for admission.
      • If you attended a U.S. high school, credit transferred from foreign high schools and listed on the U.S. transcript will be accepted.
      • Applicants from an institution that does not issue a transcript in English must submit the native language transcript with an official English translation. Official translations are prepared by a recognized translation service and include all original seals and/or signatures.
      • Consolidated transcripts or provisional mark-sheets are not considered official. Please ask the registrar to send individual mark-sheets that list grades earned in each term.
      • Transcripts are considered official if they have an original signature of a school official or an original school seal. Accepted signatures include the Registrar, Principal, Controller of Examinations, or The Ministry of Education. Photocopies or other duplications of a transcript, such as notarized copies, faxed or scanned documents are not considered official.
      • For applicants who have attended an American or Canadian post-secondary institution (college or university): Institutions that use the national ANSI ASC X12 transcript format (SPEEDE) prefer to send and receive transcripts electronically. Many universities can use the electronic format. Electronic transcripts can be processed much faster than paper transcripts.
      • Texas A&M will accept transcripts sent electronically through SPEEDE or eSCRIP-SAFE. Transcripts from any other vendor will not be accepted. 
      • If the institution cannot use this format, please ask each registrar to enclose one copy of your transcript in a sealed, signed envelope. Please mail this envelope with the seal unbroken and the registrar's signature intact to the Office of Admissions at the address below. If the registrar will not release your transcripts to you in a sealed envelope, transcripts may be sent by the registrar directly to:
