Worley’s initial assignment after Navy pilot training in Pensacola, Florida was to Helicopter Combat Support Squadron SIX, flying the H-46 Sea Knight, where he deployed on USS SANTA BARBARA and USS MILWAUKEE in the Mediterranean Sea/Atlantic Ocean. He served as helicopter Operations Officer and Nuclear Weapons Officer for Commander Tactical Support Wing ONE in Norfolk, Virginia. He then transferred to Training Squadron TWENTY-SEVEN, Corpus Christi, Texas, as a primary flight instructor, flying the T-28 Trojan. Further aviation command tours include Air Officer on USS LA SALLE, Persian Gulf/Indian Ocean, earning a secondary warfare qualification as a Surface Warfare Officer; USS ROANOKE and USS WICHITA, Western Pacific, as HC-11 Helicopter Detachment Officer-in-Charge; HC-5, Guam as Executive Officer and then Commanding Officer and then as Aviation Department Head (Air Boss) aboard USS WASP, Norfolk, Virginia. Staff Duties includes Joint Professional Military Education Phase II at the Armed Forces Staff College; Deputy Political Advisor USACOM/SACLANT, Norfolk, Virginia; Federal Executive Fellow in the US Department of State’s 38th Senior Seminar at the Foreign Service Institute in Washington serving as a member of the Vice President’s National Performance Review and as National Fatherhood Program Coordinator. He Served as Commanding Officer of the US Naval Support Facility, Diego Garcia, US Representative for the British Indian Ocean Territory and CINCPACFLT Liaison Officer to the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) in Washington DC, where he was selected to serve as Deputy Director, Programming Division (N80B) in the Office of the CNO in the Pentagon. He is designated as a proven Joint Services Officer. Most recently, he served as the Professor of Naval Science and the Head of the Department of Naval Science at the University of Illinois and the Commanding Officer of the Naval Reserve Officer Training corps (NROTC). Worley retired from the Navy as a captain. After his retirement he served as the Interim Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of the Champaign County Convention and Visitors Bureau before selection as Superintendent. As Superintendent of the Texas Maritime Academy, Worley was appointed Rear Admiral (two-star) in the U.S. Maritime Service by Sean P. Connaughton, Maritime Administrator. Decorations include the Legion of Merit Medal (3 awards), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), Navy Commendation Medal, and various campaign and unit awards. Rear Admiral Worley is married to Margena Beal Worley and they reside in Galveston, Texas. They have five adult children.
