From 2002 to 2008, McClendon held the position of Chief of Staff to the President of Texas A&M University. In that role he provided advice and insight on various issues involving the Office of the President, including policies, practices, historical background, potential legal implications and constituent interests. Additionally, McClendon holds an appointment as an adjunct assistant professor in the College of Education and Human Resource Development. He has extensive experience in student affairs and academic affairs. Prior to joining Texas A&M as coordinator of student retention and development for the Department of Multicultural Services in 1995, he worked as a residence hall director at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. After a year in the dual role of coordinator of student retention and development and interim assistant director of the Department of Multicultural Services, McClendon was appointed assistant provost, a post in which he advised the chief academic officer and served as the campus ethics officer. McClendon earned his Ph.D. in leadership, education and communications at Texas A&M University. He earned a bachelor of business administration degree with a concentration in banking and finance in 1990 from Morehouse College and then earned a doctor of jurisprudence degree from the Emory University School of Law in 1994.
