Supplemental Instruction
SI Schedules and Room Assignments for Spring 2012
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an internationally recognized approach to student support developed at the University of Missouri- Kansas City in 1973 by Dr. Deanna Martin. This free program is designed to reduce attrition and improve academic performance.
SI identifies “high risk” courses. SI leaders have completed these courses successfully and hold structured, group study sessions outside the classroom.
Each SI holds a one hour session, three times a week, Monday through Thursday during the hours of 7:00 PM and 9:00PM. They implement activities and identify learning styles to maximize student learning. SI introduces and exercises study skills, critical thinking, and problem solving to better prepare students for academic success.
SI is a proactive approach to student success that finds a balance between modeling, teaching, practice, and feedback. The SI program targets traditionally difficult courses, rather than the students who are having trouble in the course. In close partnership with the professor, SI leaders plan, and facilitate activities that not only reinforce the content, but introduce and exercise study skills, critical thinking and problem solving. By focusing on these skills, SI paves the way for future success and student independence throughout their college career.
