S.A.I.L. Learning Community Structure
Texas A&M Galveston has begun to implement learning communities by the name of Sea Aggies Involved in Learning (S.A.I.L) for new students. This program has been designed to aid students in meeting their collegiate goals while enforcing the idea of community and personal connections among peers. It also allows students to explore an area of personal interest while completing part of the core classes. Tied together with common themes, integrated course work, specific interest, learning communities build connections – between you and your co-workers, you and TAMUG, and, of course, your interests.
2011 Information
S.A.I.L. Learning Communities provides selected students an opportunity to attend courses during the summer term to assist in academic development and college transition. The S.A.I.L. new student conference opens at 8:30 a.m. on July 2, 2012. Students will be welcomed to Texas A&M University, have a TAMUG identification card made, purchase books, and make tuition payments till 10:00 a.m. From 10:00 a.m. to noon, students will move personal belongings into their dorm rooms.
S.A.I.L. Program participants are required to complete a minimum of two content courses during the summer term and a kinesiology class. Students are required to take CAEN-101 “Applications of Learning Theories” with either Math or English.
The math placement exam is used to evaluate a student's math skills. Remember, you must take the math placement assessment prior to your new student conference. Go to http://www.tamug.edu/acen/Students/PlacementExams.html to take the math placement test.
If needed, students will be enrolled in basic skills non-credit hour courses for math, reading, and/or writing to fulfill “college readiness” requirements for the Texas Success Initiative (TSI). You may telephone or email Laurissa Noack if you have questions about college readiness at (409) 741-4340 or noackl@tamug.edu.
Participants will reside in campus housing (unless an exemption is granted for those living with a parent in Galveston County or the surrounding area) to get the full college-going experience. If you have questions about campus housing please telephone (409) 740-4445.
S.A.I.L. helps students focus on success by providing support, personalized advising, and skill development in areas specific for each. TAMUG S.A.I.L. students will learn firsthand why being an Aggie holds prestige, both academically and personally! S.A.I.L. provides class activities and assignments that are structured to allow students to work together, to learn together and to get to know each other.
