TSI Compliance Frequently Asked Questions
Am I TSI Compliant or exempt from taking the THEA?
select to determine Exemptions
For clarification about exemptions, email AdvisingAssessment@tamug.edu or call the Office of Academic Enhancement at (409) 741-4343.
What should I do if I know I am exempt?
Official exam scores or documents that contain exemption information should be mailed, emailed, faxed, or hand-delivered to the TAMUG Admissions and Records Office so that they can be added to the student's official record. You should confirm that TAMUG has your exemption information on file and that your status has been updated in the system with the Office of Academic Enhancement.

Students that are not exempt in math, reading, or writing, should take one of the approved exams (listed below) at any official college/university or testing center as soon as possible or they will not be eligible to enroll in college-level coursework. Please note that the THEA is only offered at public Texas institutions. All other exams are nationally recognized and should be available in most states. Once you have taken an exam, please fax test scores to (409) 741-4344 or email to AdvisingAssessment@tamug.edu and confirm that your status has been updated in the system.

What if I do not earn a passing score on one or more sections of the exam?
Students who have tested, but have not attained the established minimum scores on one or more sections of the test are required by Texas Law to obtain TSI advising and to enroll in a formal program of skills development each semester until they have passed all sections of the test. Assigned skills development must be completed as a condition of enrollment.
TSI Deficient students at TAMUG will automatically be enrolled in the corresponding developmental course(s) for the semester and blocked from certain college-level courses. Students may enroll in any college-level courses that do not fall under the deficient subject areas. Upon completion of a developmental course, TAMUG students are required to take the corresponding section of the ACCUPLACER exam to determine college readiness and change their TSI status. Once a student is compliant, the TSI/THEA Hold is permanently removed from their account and they are eligible for any college-level coursework.
Please contact the Office of Academic Enhancement for TSI Advising and Compliance requirements at (409) 741-4343 or AdvisingAssessment@tamug.edu.
