First Scholars Program

The mission of the First Scholars program is to serve Texas resident, First Generation, incoming freshman students in the transition to the university by offering research based, multilevel support to address the unique challenges of first generation students.

Program objectives include

  • increasing university access for first generation students
  • targeting resources for financial aid to reduce loans and increase satisfaction
  • advancing first year retention relative to Non-First Generation students
  • improving four year and six year graduation rates relative to Non-First Generation students
  • addressing any developmental education needs in the first semester
  • enhancing student perceptions of inclusion and support
  • reducing academic deficiency

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Complete any developmental course requirements
  • Articulate university and academic major expectations
  • Participate in academic and social peer interactions
  • Identify strategies related to self-regulated learning, critical thinking, problem solving, time management, and goal-setting
