The mission of the First Scholars program is to serve Texas resident, First Generation, incoming freshman students in the transition to the university by offering research based, multilevel support to address the unique challenges of first generation students.

Program objectives include

  • increasing university access for first generation students
  • targeting resources for financial aid to reduce loans and increase satisfaction
  • advancing first year retention relative to Non-First Generation students
  • improving four year and six year graduation rates relative to Non-First Generation students
  • addressing any developmental education needs in the first semester
  • enhancing student perceptions of inclusion and support
  • reducing academic deficiency

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Complete any developmental course requirements
  • Articulate university and academic major expectations
  • Participate in academic and social peer interactions
  • Identify strategies related to self-regulated learning, critical thinking, problem solving, time management, and goal-setting

Program Features

  • $5,000 scholarship for the academic year
    • Renewable for four (4) years after each semester
    • Probation status available for one (1) semester 
    • Requirements for continued funding
      • Good academic standing (minimum 2.0 GPA)
      • Financial aid progress to degree
  • Mandatory program orientation during the first week of class
  • First Scholars Living Learning Community (for residential students) + ResLife Community Leader
    • Enrollment in LCSE 002 First Scholars course
  • Peer Mentors
  • Individualized mentoring for academic and leadership development. Could include:
    • 12th Man Leadership Program
    • Professional staff/faculty mentors
    • Selected campus workshops/events that aid in university acclimation
